Urban and Regional Planning

Graduate Diploma
The Master of Urban and Regional Planning program at UniSA prepares graduates from a wide range of backgrounds for challenging and well‑paid careers in planning. Planners work at a range of scales – local, state, national and international – and provide advice to governments, private developers, local communities and other participants in the urban development process.
The program provides a broad understanding of processes of urban and
regional development and a grounding in the key areas of professional
knowledge and skill required by planners. Core areas of the program include
Planning Policy and Law, the Economics of Property Development, Social
Planning, Sustainable Urban Design, Energy‑Efficient Settlements and
Buildings, Transport Planning and
Environmental Impact Assessment. Students can also take elective courses and
streams in a wide range of related areas, including Urban Ecology,
Architectural and Cultural Heritage, Environmental Law, Professional Ethics
and Planning in Developing Countries.
A highlight of the program for many students is the opportunity to take part
in an international urban design studio, held in Penang,
Malaysia, each September. This studio, like most of the other elements of
coursework in the program, focuses on real‑world issues and on resolving
contemporary social and environmental problems.
